Some of my long form stories that I spent not just time, but research, and extra effort - didn't necessarily do well, whereas other shorter pieces did. I think it mostly boils down to the topic and corresponding content. Personally, I love a short story, that still manages to either amuse, inform, motivate, or cause me to think.
